About Framlingham
Framlingham is a market town in the Mid Suffolk district of Suffolk, England, situated approximately 22 miles from Ipswich and 18 miles from the coast at Aldeburgh. The town is home to around 3,500 people and serves as a service centre for many surrounding villages and hamlets.
The town's most prominent landmark is Framlingham Castle, a 12th-century curtain-wall fortress managed by English Heritage. The castle is open to visitors year-round and is one of the finest examples of Norman military architecture in the country.
Below the castle walls lies the Mere, a medieval ornamental lake that is now a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and local nature reserve. The surrounding countryside — rolling fields, ancient hedgerows, and quiet lanes — is quintessential Suffolk.
Framlingham has held a weekly market since receiving its royal charter in 1272. The town retains a strong tradition of independent shops, and market day on Saturdays continues to draw people from across the area.
